Today we are listening to the finished demo version of a song. That almost died a silent death in my iPhone music cemetery.
If you read Part 1 you’ll know that over the last few years I’ve recorded hundreds of ideas like this and never finished them. Now, I’m experimenting to see what happens when I put in a little extra effort to finish them.
This is the second one I’ve done like this. The first can be viewed here.
This is called ‘Love Sick’.
Click here to watch it on YouTube.
This is by no means a finished song. I only did one take of the guitar and vocals and I didn’t fix anything. I added a second guitar track to the chorus because I tracked the vocals and guitar at the same time. And the guitar was too far away from the microphone to be heard well enough.
I could have re-recorded it and possibly gotten a better take on attempt #37. But these are still demos. (you can hear the unfinished version here)
And I don’t want to get ahead of myself, yet.
Thanks for tuning in, let me know what you think.

I agree with the dude that says you have that “Hozier” kind of sound….cool, yet raw and emotive. Thanks for sharing Malan and do make more.

The music is haunting but the lyrics can be more than this… Can feel your emotion but somehow the words doesn’t seem to match the song…. hope you can keep this up…. 🙂

PS. Always wondered how you had such great speaking and vocal presence in your regular videos/training tips. Now I see that your having a expert/professional voice must help.
Malan Darras says
thanks I’m a pretty introverted and quiet guy, but in social situations and when speaking in front of people, I do a good job of not acting like one 🙂
Ken L says
Nice. I’ll keep that in mind whilst I practise to do the same.
Ken L says
Wow, sounds really good Malan. I’m not familiar with any of your previous music, but you really sound like a professional here. Look forward to more.
Malan Darras says
thanks Ken, I’ve been doing it for quite a while. (much longer than advertising)
Joe says
Awesome! Will you be working on this tune further and posting updates?
Malan Darras says
not right now. I don’t want to get too lost in any one track. my goal this year is just to release them in a demo format as they come. I know me and if I think any further than that right now I’ll freeze up. So it’s less about perfection and more about getting into a flow.
Ken L says
This is kind of like getting into the flow of putting out campaigns consistently…
Joe says
Awesome, keep ’em coming!

Well done, my friend. Kristin and I are both enjoying the new tunes — it’s great to hear your musical voice again. It’s connecting.
Malan Darras says
thanks matt!

This is a great song man (and video). I hate to use this comparison again (it’s a compliment) but you really have that raw grit feel that the Hozier stuff does. A lot of this kind of music is missing in these days of over production and over thought junk.
You better be careful – you’re going to need some dudes to maintain your stuff if you find yourself stuff in the right place and the right time! 🙂
Malan Darras says
thanks man i’ll check him out. and yeah the world needs more raw music, agreed.
