Today I’m posting a cover version I did of a song by Nirvana. The song is called ‘Something In The Way‘ and was on the album Nevermind.
Click here to watch it on YouTube.
There are two reasons I decided to record this.
- People have been comparing the rawness of my other two songs to ‘Something In The Way’, which brought the song back to my attention.
- I saw ‘Montage of Heck‘, a new documentary about Kurt Cobain that blew my mind.
During the documentary ‘Something In The Way’ came on. Sitting there in the Arclight theater Cinerama Dome it sounded like a miracle. I’d forgotten how great those songs were. Especially this one.

As I walked home from the movie I decided I had to record it. So I recorded the guitar and vocals in one take the next morning.
I then sat on the track for a month or so before I finally sat down and added some of the other instruments. I used french horns, a tambourine, a triangle and some synth violins. You can hear these other elements starting at the beginning of the second verse.
The footage for the video was recorded in front of the Arclight theater (on a different day) and features an anonymous street musician.
I was walking around one day and heard a piano. Then I found this guy pounding on the keys and thrashing his hair around on the corner. It looked like he’d just wheeled the piano up there himself and started playing. So I grabbed a few minutes of footage and added it to the song.
If you like the video, please do me a favor and go to the YouTube page and click ‘Like’ and leave a comment there.
See you in the future,
Malan

Atta boy Malan!! You did that cover justice! Any chance you have ideas on some Alice in Chains covers? I think you can vocally handle it.

Nice to see your thought process on this Malan. Like how you did the video in black and white and slowed it down.
Look forward to seeing more your work. Take care. SYITF!
